 Report

On a lovely sunny 20th of July, ETL FTC held their 10th Essex 50.  The 50 target course was laid entirely in the woods and with it being such a warm day turned out to be the right decision.

Owing to a country fair being held in Norfolk the normal contingency from Fenland were missing, but there were a good few shooters from other parts including Kent Woodsmen, Comets, Wendover, Bisley, Colne Valley, Rough Wedge, Dowry Hill, Springfield, and last but certainly not least Bobby Banks all the way from Harriers, who found his way even without Dave Harrison (who was on his way to winning the Scottish Grand Prix).

We had decided to run the competition as last year with a shotgun start and a break after 26 targets, as this seemed to work well the previous year.

There was enough wind to make it hard for the good shooters and impossible for the rest of us, the course twisting and turning meant the wind direction was changing virtually from lane to lane. It was very pleasing to see from the 54 entrants, 27 were home shooters from ETL.

Around 1pm and after 26 targets we all stopped for a well earned rest and sustenance supplied (thank you very much) by Elizabeth Kearey and son David who had also helped with other tasks during the competition.

There had been some good scores from the first half banded about, and of course a few porkies as well, someone did say that Cliff Church had gone back to the zero range again as the 2 hours in the morning hadn’t been enough!

By just after 2pm we all assumed position on our respective lanes and battle commenced, the wind had not got any easier, and the afternoon sun was making parallaxing on some targets quite difficult.  At the end of the competition there were some excellent scores coming in and it soon became clear that Steve Clarke from Comets with an excellent 47ex50 was the winner.  There was some very good scores from all grades, our own young Robert Walker put in a superb 38, which would have won him the B grade, but gave him 2nd place in the C grade.

The AA Grade was won by Steve Clark with 47 which meant he also won the coveted Crystal Shooter as Top Gun of the day, Steve Lanyman also from Comets was runner-up with 46, and Cliff Church and Daniel Eley tied for third with 45, Cliff won the shoot off proving that all that practice can pay off.

The other grades were as follows:- A Grade 1st Terry Ord 44, 2nd Stuart Clarke 41, 3rd Dean Robinson 40 (after shoot-off with Chris Large).  B Grade 1st T Sultana 36, 2nd Cleve Bull 32, 3rd Walley Tayler 31. C Grade 1st A Holloway 40, 2nd Robert Walker 38, 3rd Ian Harris 35, well done to Ian in his first BFTA format competition. The full list of results can be seen at the bottom of this page.

Tha Spring Gun Grade as normal produced some excellent shooting with Nick Murphy winning with 39, 2nd Darren Haywood 36, 3rd Bill Yallop 24.

We hope all that came enjoyed the day and maybe some noticed the trophies had a Field Target shooter engraved on them, quite novel for most Field Target events. Finally thank you to the famous few who worked so hard to make the day such a success.
